Felony charges are, as many people know, among the most serious types of criminal charges that can be filed against someone. Within the felony classification of charges, however, there are 6 levels – or classes – of charges that range in severity and that each have a specified range of possible sentences if a person is ultimately convicted of the felony charge.
In this blog series, we will provide a general overview of the six Colorado felony classes and their associated range of sentences. While the information discussed herein is general, you can easily get more specific info about Colorado felony classes and sentencing – as well as any criminal case you may be facing – by contacting the Griffin Law Firm today.
Colorado Felony Charges: The Classes and Sentences
The following outlines the range of possible sentences that can be imposed when people whre convicted of the following charges and the conviction has been handed down for offenses committed after July 1993 (per Colo. Rev. Stat. §§ 18-1.3-401, 18-1.3-402, 18-1.3-403.):
- Class 1 Felony Charges – Reserved for the most serious offenses (like murder), these charges can be punishable by life in prison or potentially even the death penalty (depending, of course, on the details of the alleged offense).
- Class 2 Felony Charges – Also extremely serious, these criminal charges are associated with sentences of between 8 and 24 years in prison and fines that can range from $5,000 to as much as $1 million. Certain violent crimes and drug crimes may be filed as Class 2 felonies in Colorado.
- Class 3 Felony Charges – When convictions for these felony charges are handed down, the associated sentence can include between 4 and 12 years in prison and fines that range from $3,000 up to $750,000.
- Class 4 Felony Charges – For these charges, convictions can be punishable by 2 to 6 years of prison time and fines that range from $2,000 up to $500,000.
- Class 5 Felony Charges – Convictions for these felony charges will usually result in prison sentences of between 1 and 3 years, as well as fines that range from $1,000 to $100,000.
- Class 6 Felony Charges – As the least serious type of felony charge, Class 6 felonies can result in sentences of 12 to 18 months in prison, as well as fines of $1,000 to $100,000, upon conviction.
