276 DUI Arrests Made over 2015 Thanksgiving Day Crackdown in Colorado
December 8, 2015
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP), along with more than 100 local law enforcement agencies, made 276 drunk driving arrests over the 2015 Thanksgiving holiday The Heat Is On DUI campaign, according to the latest reports from Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
While more than half of these arrests were made over Saturday and Sunday, the agencies that reported the highest arrests numbers for the entire campaign included:
- CSP, with 69 DUI arrests
- Aurora Police Department, with 28 DUI arrests
- Denver Police Department, with 23 DUI arrests.
Noting the risks of impaired driving during the holidays, as well as authorities’ ongoing DUI enforcement efforts for 2015, Col. Scott Hernandez, Chief of the CSP, has explained that:
Many of us travel during the holidays, so it is more important than ever to keep impaired drivers off of Colorado’s roadways…We will continue to enforce Colorado’s DUI laws aggressively throughout the two remaining The Heat Is On enforcement periods this year and beyond. If you choose to drink, make sure you have a designated sober driver, or plan to use alternative transportation.
2015 Thanksgiving DUI Arrests in Colorado Drop for Second Consecutive Year
Although this year’s Thanksgiving DUI campaign netted a substantial number of arrests, these numbers reflect a decline in the drunk driving arrests made over the same period for both 2014 and 2013. In fact, when compared to:
- 2014, when 346 DUI arrests were made, there has been a more than 20 percent drop in the DUI arrest rate.
- 2013, when 411 DUI arrests were made, there has been a nearly 33 percent drop in the arrest rate.
This two-year decline may indicate a promising trend, revealing that authorities’ anti-drunk driving education and enforcement campaigns are having a positive effect on driver behavior.
And, authorities are not resting after the Thanksgiving DUI crackdown, as they are continuing their heightened efforts to arrest drunk drivers throughout 2015 with the:
- Holiday Office Party crackdown, which is now underway and will run through Monday 12/14
- Christmas and New Year’s crackdown, which will start later this month and run through New Year’s Day.
So, if you plan on celebrating your Christmas and/or New Year’s with alcohol, start making your plans now for a sober ride or a place to stay to reduce your risk of a holiday DUI arrest.
